ABOUT THE TSS EARNSLAW

The TSS Earnslaw is an integral part of Queenstown’s pioneering history and to this day a Queenstown icon.

She was commissioned by New Zealand Railways to service the communities around Lake Wakatipu. Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslaw’s maiden voyage was on 18 Oct. 1912.

Soon known as “The Lady of the Lake,” she provided an essential link between the isolated farming communities along the lake and the outside world. At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the lake and carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies.

Nearly scrapped in 1968, she was rescued and purchased by Real Journeys and put to work once again carrying passengers around the Lake. Since then, the TSS Earnslaw has been painstakingly restored to its original condition – everything you see is pretty much like it was a 100 years ago. Today, the TSS Earnslaw is the only coal-fired steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere, making her one of the most unique experiences in the world.

The TSS Earnslaw has been featured in several movies, including a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as an Amazon river boat. Parts of the trawler S.S. Venture in Peter Jackson’s King Kong were inspired by the TSS Earnslaw. Famous composer Ron Goodwin composed a piece of music inspired by the rhythm of the TSS Earnslaw’s engines.

WALTER PEAK HIGH COUNTRY FARM

Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu, is steeped in history. Its sheltered bays were used as camping sites by Māori traveling to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers on Moa hunting and pounamu (greenstone) gathering expeditions.

European settlement commenced in the 1860s with initial farming attempts by Von Tunzelmann. Stock deaths, snowstorms and lack of money eventually forced him off the land.

Following a quick succession of owners, Walter Peak Station was taken over in the late 1880s by the Mackenzies. This family is credited with developing many of the principles of successful high-country farming during their 80 years working the property.

DAY 4 – FRIDAY 21 OCTOBER 2022

4WD TOUR OF SKIPPERS CANYON, MACETOWN & EXPLORE ARROWTOWN

Today we will be adventurous as we head out in fully equipped 4WD vehicles and explore down into remote Skippers Canyon and Macetown, and to The Lord of the Rings locations around the Wakatipu Basin.

Skippers Road was hacked by hand. Clinging to the sheer cliffside, this road is one of the most adventurous roads in the world. High above the Shotover River, enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery from high above the gorge. The Shotover River was known as the richest river in the world in the days of the gold miners. Gold is still being found today, so you may get lucky and find a pot of gold!

Then we will follow the miners’ old wagon trail and explore the historic gold mining town of Macetown. Long since abandoned after the gold rush, Macetown has now been transformed into a Department of Conservation reserve. Experience up to 50 thrilling river crossings and the narrow, rugged road. There are few places in New Zealand that match Macetown!

You will enjoy lunch in Arrowtown and be able to spend your own time exploring this charming and quirky gold rush village. Nestled beside the sparkling Arrow River and below magnificent peaks, Arrowtown is a thriving community that is packed with character, as well as some of the best dining and shopping in the country. You’ll be enchanted by heritage main street, where you can discover the history of the area by visiting the museum and the Chinese Settlement, or you can hire a bike to get around the trails and explore more of the countryside. Arrowtown is a New Zealand treasure!

*Children under the age of 5 are not allowed to attend the 4WD tour due to health and safety concerns. The hotel can arrange a babysitter, or a family member will need to remain behind to supervise the child/children.

Travel & Flight Details

DO I NEED A VISA OR PASSPORT?

Australian passport holders do not require a visa for New Zealand, but we highly recommend that you check with either your local embassy, or this government website https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas, or your travel agent to determine whether a visa is needed and whether there is a cost associated. If you need to request a visa letter, please email louise.corran@jeunessehq.com.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DID NOT GET THE PROPER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS (SUCH AS A VISA) OR DO NOT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE PASSPORT DOCUMENTATION AND AM DENIED BOARDING OF MY FLIGHT?

The proper travel documents are your responsibility. Should you not procure the appropriate travel documents and are denied boarding and unable to attend the trip, you will forfeit the value of the trip as well as your airfare voucher, and the cancellation fee will apply.

HOW ARE FLIGHTS BOOKED?
Once you have submitted your RSVP through the online registration system, you are then responsible for booking and paying for your own flights. We recommend booking as early as possible to get the best rates, so you will have more to spend on souvenirs!
HOW AND WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY TRAVEL VOUCHER FOR MY FLIGHTS AND REIMBURSEMENTS OF MY FLIGHT?

Once you have booked your flight, please email the receipt louise.corran@jeunessehq.com. Reimbursements can take up to 30 days after the completion of the trip and are only issued to Distributors who attended the trip. We will reimburse you the value of the earned airfare voucher.
While we know business class can be tempting, should you choose to purchase a ticket priced higher than the value of your voucher, you will be responsible for the difference.

WHAT HAPPENS IF JEUNESSE CANCELS OR POSTPONES OUR INCENTIVE TRIP?
While we never expect to cancel or postpone any of our trips, unforeseen circumstances can arise. ITINERARY

WHEN WILL I KNOW WHICH ACTIVITIES WE WILL BE DOING DURING THE WEEK?
As we finish planning your getaway, make sure to regularly check the website and the Jeunesse Travel section of your Joffice pertaining to your trip for a full itinerary. Once you arrive at your hotel, you can pick up a printed itinerary and some fun swag at the hospitality desk, where a Jeunesse representative will be present.
WHO DO I ASK IF I HAVE QUESTIONS WHEN I ARRIVE?
Someone assigned to our group will be at the hospitality desk at your hotel to answer your questions.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK, AND IS THERE A DRESS CODE?

October is the middle of spring in New Zealand, and the average temperatures during the day can be 11° C to 17° C, with evening lows of 4° C to 6° C.

The most important thing to know when planning what to wear in New Zealand is that you should pack for “four seasons in one day”, which means your packing list won’t change drastically for winter versus summer. As the weather is forever changing, be prepared to carry a second warm outfit with you when you’re out and about, in case of an unexpected rain shower.

In general, we recommend casual attire for most of the trip, as you may be doing a lot of outdoor activities. For opening and closing gatherings, cocktail attire should be worn.

YOU MAY WANT TO PACK:

• Warm down jacket that is wind and water-resistant.
• Comfortable footwear, leather hiking boots recommended. Plus evening footwear
• Water bottle
• Travel umbrella or raincoat
• Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses
• Scarf, beanie, and gloves
• Travel sickness pills if you experience motion sickness.
• Bug spray. Cold or warm, the sandflies will always come to the party!
• A formal / cocktail outfit for the farewell dinner.
